Measurement system

Include additional material for cuts, uneven ground, settling, and minor project adjustments.

Buying tip: Bag quantities use the selected package size. Weight-based bags assume an estimated density of approximately 100 lb per cubic foot (1.60 tonnes per cubic meter). Verify the product density and compacted coverage before purchasing.

Planning guide

What is sand?

Landscape sand ranges from coarse washed aggregate to fine masonry products. Particle size and cleanliness determine whether it drains, compacts, or finishes smoothly.

How this calculation works

Area multiplied by installed thickness gives volume. Weight is an estimate because wet sand can be substantially heavier than dry loose material.

Common measurement mistakes

  • Using play sand beneath structural pavers
  • Failing to account for moisture
  • Installing an excessively thick loose bedding layer

Professional tips

  • Screed bedding sand evenly
  • Protect stored sand from runoff
  • Follow the paver manufacturer's base specification

Sand Calculator FAQs

How much extra sand should I buy?

A 10% allowance is a practical starting point for settling, spillage, uneven grade, and measurement error. Complex shapes may justify a little more.

Should I measure before or after edging?

Measure the finished inside dimensions of the area. Permanent edging occupies space and should not be included in the material footprint.

What depth should I use?

Paver bedding is often about 1 inch (2.5 cm) after compaction; other uses vary widely by system.
