Topsoil Buying Guide
How to evaluate screened soil, calculate quantity, and prepare for delivery.
Topsoil is not one standard recipe
A screened product may be easier to rake but still differ greatly in texture and organic matter. Ask what the blend contains and whether it is intended for lawns, gardens, or general fill.
Estimate finished volume
Calculate the area and finished depth, then allow for settlement. A shallow lawn topdressing needs far less soil than rebuilding a grade or filling a raised bed.
- Inspect a damp sample
- Check for debris and large clods
- Discuss delivery access and surface protection
Integrate, do not bury
A sharp boundary between unlike soils can affect water movement. For planting projects, loosen the existing surface and follow locally appropriate soil preparation guidance.
