Landscape Fabric Explained

Where landscape fabric helps, where it disappoints, and how to measure overlaps.

Fabric is a separator, not a permanent cure

Geotextile can keep aggregate from mixing into soil and can slow some weeds. Airborne seeds can still germinate in debris that accumulates above it.

Use it selectively

Fabric is often most useful beneath inorganic aggregate. Under organic mulch, decomposition creates new growing media above the sheet and makes future bed changes awkward.

  • Remove established weeds first
  • Overlap seams and pin them
  • Keep drainage paths open

Calculate usable coverage

Roll dimensions show gross area. Deduct overlaps, edge turns, cutouts, and irregular offcuts. A 10% allowance is a starting point, not a guarantee for intricate beds.

Put the numbers to work
