Start with the finished bed

Measure each bed separately and use its inside length and width. Break curves into smaller rectangles, add their areas, and subtract patios or large permanent features. Accurate area matters more than false precision in any single measurement.

Choose a useful depth

Established ornamental beds commonly receive two to three inches. Deep layers can hold excess moisture against stems, while thin layers expose soil and lose weed-suppression value.

• Use a 10% allowance for contours and settling
